BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1957, I was raised by my American mother and German father, a journalist, in Germany. My mother's passion for 20th century art and my fathers equally intense love of modern design led to an education in both of those disciplines through osmosis. Mostly, I'd say it happened during dinner conversations, where we'd talk about what the difference is between art and design, what makes design "good" or "bad". My mother and I would pore over her art books, where she would point out that leaves on the trees in those paintings were not necessarily green, water not always blue, and she'd make me look outside to see for myself that this was true in nature. We'd talk about what light does, and distance. She would draw an egg and turn it into a face, explaining proportion and many other things one would normally learn in art school. Add to this the fact that I grew up in a house flooded with light which, thanks mostly to my father's preference, was extremely contemporary with gray floors, whether tiled or carpeted, white walls and black furniture. The only color, and subtle color at that, was added by Japanese screens, figures, pottery and scrolls and my mother's ikebana flower arrangements. She had spent 3 years in Japan as a teenager. Much air was given to each piece to let it breathe, and so was born my love of negative space. To this day, I loathe what I consider overdecorated, overstuffed and cluttered spaces, public or private. I find myself remembering my father's words that "a room should wait for the people, not pounce on them". An intense four year foray into traditional West African drumming further reinforced my understanding of "air". My teachers would tell me that the space has equal importance as the beat. It took more than four decades of living for me to decide to become an artist. I've been told that my pieces have an "asian feel", and now you know why.
